Tower in Koutumoulas

Tower in Koutumoulas

Visit the magnificent Venetian Tower of Koutumoulas, the tallest medieval monument in Evia

To the north of the Koutumoulas settlement, which stretches southwest from the village of Velos (or Velousia), stands the beautiful Venetian tower that gazes from the top of the hill onto the plain of the Kriez area. The tower, like the adjacent settlement, takes its name from the Venetian landowner who once owned the area.

It is estimated that it was built in the 15th century, it is 23 meters high and is the tallest medieval monument in Evia.

During the Byzantine era and the Frankish period, a settlement had developed around the tower, the remains of which have been found in the area.

Among the finds are many wells, while, according to the archaeologists, the settlement had an aqueduct which unfortunately has not been preserved.

The tower is kept in fairly good condition and has easy access, while next to it is a small chapel dedicated to the Entry of the Virgin.

It is located between Aliveri, the wetland of Dystos and Agios Apostoulos Petrion.
